The importance of investing in noise abatement on construction sites

Investing in health and safety measures on construction sites might seem like a regulatory burden, particularly when it comes to the unseen danger that is nuisance noise.

Of course, the safety of your workforce is of vital importance – but what is often overlooked is how these investments can also save you money in the long run. And that’s especially true when it comes to noise.

The dangers of noise

Contractors know too well how overlooking health and safety can derail a project. Physical injuries tend to grind works to a halt and lead to lengthy delays – let alone fines should the Health and Safety at Work Act be broken.

But what cannot be downplayed are the hidden physical and mental scars nuisance noise can cause to both workers and the public. Nor the mounting fines firms can face as a result.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 states workers cannot be exposed to noise louder than 87dB, even when taking into account noise abatement and protection measures.

Failure to protect people from such high levels of sound can lead to permanent hearing loss – and law firms are starting to wise up to the opportunity to sue construction companies whose staff have been affected.

Compensation can range from anywhere between £7,000 to £45,000 for partial hearing loss and tinnitus to more than £100,000 for a total loss of hearing. Should multiple workers be affected, fines could quickly be enough to shut an entire business down for good.

And then there’s the Control of Pollution Act 1974, which protects the public from nuisance noise. Complaints made to local authorities can lead to fines in the thousands of pounds.

Investing in effective noise abatement measures is therefore a necessity to prevent the risk of spiralling fines.

How Echo Barrier can help

We have supported megaprojects around the world in protecting workers and the public – including on the construction of the Elizabeth Line (then Crossrail) – reducing complaints and ensuring smooth operations.

Our products are built to deliver world-leading noise abatement, typically reducing sound energy by as much as 99%.

And they achieve that without being a big burden on your budget.

All our products are available both for purchase and lease, granting you greater flexibility for shorter term projects. With their incredible lifespan, they also make for a perfect long-term investment.
