Survey reveals extent of London construction noise nuisance
A survey has revealed the extent construction noise proves a nuisance to Londoners – highlighting the importance of investing in noise abatement solutions.
The survey, conducted by urban impact agency Urban Thinking, found 82% of people living in the capital have faced issues from construction noise in the past year.
Of those, 32% said they have been impacted more than three times.
Why is this important?
Strict laws are in place to penalise developers and contractors who breach noise regulations.
Local residents can complain to their local council should noise from a construction project be causing too much of a nuisance, who then have powers to act under the Control of Pollution Act 1974.
These actions include restricting working hours, insisting noise mitigation processes are put in place. Failure to adhere to a noise abatement notice can lead to fines or shutdowns of operations.
With such a high number of Londoners reporting the way construction noise has impacted their lives, there is a possibility this could ultimately lead to a rise in complaints to local authorities.
Indeed articles in the national press – as well as local London outlets – have highlighted the issue in recent months.
In Kensington and Chelsea, the local authority’s dedicated noise complaints service received 1,889 calls regarding building site noise in the 2023-24 financial year alone.
